We named the event “Spring into the Great Outdoors” as the aim of the event was to encourage people to get out in the fresh air and see what Spring looks like in the orchard. The mayor of Swaffham, Shirley Matthews, unveiled the new information board at 2pm. Funding for the event was received by the Iceni Partnership from the NHS Norfolk Healthy Towns project, part of the national Change4Life programme. Dozens of people gathered at the Swaffham Community Centre for a New Year’s Day circular walk and treasure trail, lead by the Pedlar himself. The guided walk included some of Swaffham’s historic town centre and a visit to the new community orchard. The Pedlar of Swaffham legend states that after seeking his fortune in London to no avail, Pedlar John Chapman found hidden treasure under a tree on returning to his home town. Walkers celebrated the legend by collecting “hidden treasure” – gold coloured tokens hidden in trees at various points in the walk, which they exchanged for chocolate pennies and a warm drink at the end of the walk. The event was organised by the Advance Swaffham Action Group and Swaffham Museum. Sian Hogarth, the museum’s heritage projects officer said “This was the first of what we hope will become an established tradition for Swaffham residents – to celebrate the New Year with a walk through our lovely town and reviving the story of one of Swaffham’s most famous residents”. Another famous Swaffham resident, Howard Carter, the Egyptologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, will be celebrated in the town later this year. November marks the 90th anniversary of his important discovery. |
