Swaffham’s community orchard
21 November 2011: Swaffham’s community orchard received an award from CPRE Norfolk on 17 November to recognise the project's contribution to improving the landscape and widening understanding. The awards ceremony was held at the Norwich Assembly House and attended by more than 100 people including Georgie (aged 8) whose idea it was to create an orchard on some of Swaffham's disused railway land. Well done to all involved!
Advance Swaffham Action Group needs you!
Following the publication of the first annual report on Swaffham’s 10-year town plan called “Advance Swaffham – A vision for the next decade”, a change to its administration has been announced.
Swaffham’s community partnership, the Iceni Partnership, will take over the leadership of the plan from Swaffham Town Council – a change supported by both organisations, who have worked collaboratively on progressing some of the 120 actions in the original plan so far. The plan was originally launched back in September 2009 by Baroness Shephard on behalf of the Town Partnership Committee following two years of consultation and research.
Iceni Partnership Manager Dennis Tallon said “we welcome this change of approach as it will help us ensure that the outcomes of the plan are firmly owned by the community, for the community’s benefit.” Swaffham Town Clerk Richard Bishop added “This change is a natural progression for the delivery of Advance Swaffham and allows the management group greater flexibility whilst still having the full backing of the town council.”
The Advance Swaffham Action Group is always looking for more volunteers to be involved with current projects, such as the development of Swaffham’s new Community Orchard. If you would like any further information on Advance Swaffham, the annual report is available to download at: http://www.swaffhamtowncouncil.gov.uk/ , or please contact Kate at the Iceni Partnership on 01760 722800.

Advance Swaffham Annual Report
The ambitious, widely consulted on 10 year town plan called “Advance Swaffham - A vision for the next decade” has marked its first birthday with a 22-page annual report. The new report highlights the progress which has been made in implementing some of the town plan’s 120 actions to make Swaffham a better place to live, work and visit.
Successes in the first year have included the return of Swaffham’s famous outdoor Saturday Auction, becoming Breckland’s first “plastic bag-free town” and developing a community orchard. Swaffham has also collected awards from Pride In Norfolk, Action for Market Towns and Anglia In Bloom. These awards have helped highlight the transformation taking place in Swaffham, but there is still a need for local volunteers to get involved in the various exciting projects and events planned for 2011.

Do you have memories of Swaffham Market?
An event to celebrate Swaffham’s market heritage is being planned for Saturday 14 May. The “Swaffham Revival” festival will feature the 1940s to 1960s, with music and displays from the period. If you have any memories, photos or items from Swaffham’s past that you would be able to loan us for a special exhibition celebrating Swaffham’s Saturday Market, then please contact Kate Francis at Swaffham Community Centre on 01760 722800.
Swaefas Swale Community Orchard
An exciting new community project to establish a community orchard in Swaffham called “Swaefas’ Swale” has started. Volunteers have been working hard since November to clear and prepare the site ready for planting.
